Local Sea Scouts at Aldwick and Pagham set a new benchmark for their bonfire night fundraiser this year and raised £3,000 – a 55% increase over last year’s takings. The money was raised with help from locals who attended the Sea Scouts annual firework display. The event was supported by the Secure Communities Scheme with an award of £500 plus a set of security products to help protect the new Scout Hut when it is completed in September 2020.
The Secure Communities Scheme is now seeking more applications from Sussex based community projects. Any local initiative that is run by or supports the local community can apply. The scheme is set up to support grassroots activities where an award of up to £1,000 might make a significant difference. Applicants also receive a tailored security kit to help secure property, premises, equipment or storage areas.
Speaking for the Sea Scouts, Paul Goodland commented, “This year we attracted a record number of supporters to the firework display, which helped us exceed our target and reach £3000. This was a fitting way to say goodbye to our old Scout Hut as we expect to hold next year’s display at our new base which is scheduled for completion in May. I would recommend the Secure Communities Scheme to anyone organising a local fundraiser or involved in a local community project. It offered more than just cash and security products, we also got support from the Burg-Wächter team in promoting the show. I am sure the publicity helped attract more people to the event which in turn helped increase our takings”.
Besides fireworks, fun runs, festivals and fetes, the Secure Communities Scheme is open to communities undertaking maintenance or refurbishment projects relating to property or open spaces. This could involve allotments, common areas, village halls, sports fields or activity centres. Community events and activities are also eligible for anything from school breakfast clubs to jumble sales.

We regularly receive requests for products to support charitable and community causes. The Secure Communities Scheme enables us to formalise and scale up our charitable and community support so that it reaches a wider audience. We hope the Scheme’s support for the Aldwick and Pagenham Sea Scouts will encourage more applications from the West Sussex area”.
